Supergen Energy Networks Online Webinar Series – International Career Journey to UK Energy
Friday 11th September @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm
International Career Journey to UK Energy
The first session in the series will feature speakers from Academia and Industry who will discuss their career journeys, their challenges and successes from leaving their home countries through to establishing careers in UK Energy.
Professsor Jihong Wang – Head of Power and Control Systems Research Laboratory, Warwick University
Professor Wang joined the School of Engineering at the University of Warwick in January 2011 following her role as Professor of Control and Electrical Power and Deputy Director of the Midlands Energy Graduate School, University of Birmingham. She has also served as Lecturer and Senior Lecturer at the University of Liverpool from 1998 to 2007. Her research interests include power system modelling and control, energy storage and grid integration, energy efficient actuators and optimal control methods. She has published over 100 journal papers and gained several best paper awards.
Professor Zhongdong Wong – Pro Vice Chancellor and Executive Dean, University of Exeter
Professor Wang enjoys a global reputation as one of the leading academics in her field and brings a wealth of experience.
She is internationally recognised in Electrical Power Engineering and her research specialisation is Power Transformers.
Dr Panos Papadopolous – Lecturer at Strathclyde University
Dr Papadopolous area of expertise is power system stability and dynamics under increased uncertainty. He is focusing on the challenges and opportunities arising due to the integration of new technologies, such as renewable generation and technologies introduced in the smart grid concept and is also interested in power system applications of data analytics and machine learning to tackle complex problems related to power system stability.
His project ‘Using machine learning to represent power system dynamics’ was funded through the Supergen Energy Networks first flexible fund call.
Dr Richard Oduro – Research Fellow, Leeds University
Dr Oduro works on the policy and society work package of the Supergen Energy Networks Hub’s project on Multi-Vector Energy Networks (MVEN). In this role, he employs qualitative and quantitative tools for techno-economic and socio-economic analyses to assess policy and societal implications of various systems within the MVEN framework. Ultimately, he is to contribute to the design or creation of a flexible policy package to deal with long-term energy networks’ challenges.
He has previously worked at the University of Surrey as well as working with the Bank of Africa Ghana Limited as a Corporate Banker and as Credit Risk Analyst in charge of Energy Trade Finance, and Energy Project Finance.
He graduated with a BSc in Natural Resources Management in 2004 from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST, Kumasi, Ghana), an MSc in International Finance from University of Salford, Manchester, UK (2007) and subsequently gained both an MSc. in Energy Economics & Policy (2013) and a PhD in Energy Economics (2018) from the University of Surrey.
Dr John Nwobu – Research Engineer, Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult
Dr Nwobu has over 7 years of experience in working within the wind power, power electronics, and energy storage industry. He joined ORE Catapult in 2019 to provide input into the electrical infrastructure as a Research Engineer in Grid & Storage. He is responsible for the support and delivery of research and development activities related to electrical grid and storage and the development of the R&D and commercial activity in this area.
He is currently involved in some of the cutting-edge leading projects within the wind industry such as the Total Control H2020, FarmConners H2020 and ERANET CLUE project.
Prior to joining ORE Catapult, John was a project lead on research and development of hybrid energy storage systems for UK company where he was involved in the development of hybrid energy storage projects for UK and Global Energy Markets. He is an author of several journals and conference papers.
Pavlos Trikakas – Baringa Partners
Pavlos is a Director in the Energy Markets & Analytics Business Unit at Baringa Partners. He has over 14 years of experience in consulting, industry and academia, advising energy companies, financial institutions, regulators and government on a broad range of issues relating to European power and gas markets. His focus is on: (i) energy (power, gas) market modelling and economic analysis; (ii) investment and valuation advisory for energy infrastructure assets (renewables & clean tech, thermal power generation, storage & flexibility, interconnection & networks); (iii) strategy formation and evaluation for project developers and investors; and (iv) energy policy and regulation.
Prior to joining Baringa Partners, Pavlos spent 18 months at EDF Energy Networks, mostly based at the Asset Optimisation and Investment Management departments. Pavlos holds a PhD in Electrical Power Systems from Durham University, researching the commercial and technical management of active distribution networks.
