Post Doctoral Researcher

CDT currently requires a Post-Doctoral Researcher to contribute to our research and development activities within an ongoing project on high-performance batteries. The role involves designing and evaluating novel functional battery materials. In addition, you will be expected to contribute to generating ideas for future CDT technologies more widely.

Working closely with other team members, you will contribute to the identification, structural design, and development of novel materials for energy storage applications. You will develop ink and paste formulations and fabricate test devices, to establish chemical structure-property correlations in battery materials, and to characterise their impact on device performance.

Communicating effectively with all team members, and the wider organisation, to discuss results and provide next-step recommendations for the project, you will contribute to deepening our understanding of the applications space for high-performance batteries, and to identifying key players in the field. In addition, the role requires participation in projects with third parties and contributing to the generation of Intellectual Property (IP) for CDT.

You will hold a Chemistry PhD, or a Chemistry degree and equivalent work experience gained in a high-tech R&D environment, and have a strong background knowledge in organic chemistry, organometallic chemistry, or the synthesis and surface functionalisation of inorganic nano particles. Knowledge of polymers and relevant analytical techniques would be beneficial, as would experience with battery technologies and electrochemical techniques. In addition, hands-on experience within one or more of the following areas would be beneficial: design and synthesis of functional materials for ion-selective membranes or energy storage devices, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), or a demonstratable interest in the synthesis of functional materials and their evaluation in some device format. Ideally you will also have some experience in process optimisation and Design-of-Experiments.

You should have a calm and methodical approach to work, strong attention to detail, good manual dexterity, and strong organisation skills. Creativity, innovative thinking, a can-do attitude, and excellent communication skills are essential for this role. Computer literacy and familiarity with Windows and Microsoft Office products and chemical drawing packages would also be advantageous.

This role is offered on a 2 year fixed term contract.

CDT provides a dynamic work environment offering outstanding opportunities for learning and development working as part of a vibrant and diverse team. CDT offers a competitive salary and benefits package, including 27 days holiday in addition to UK bank holidays, private health and dental insurance, life assurance, income protection insurance and pension scheme.  In addition, CDT has a flexible working approach that includes flexi-time and home working.  Please apply with a full CV via the careers page of our website at or by clicking the following link:
