Project FAB-2 (Forensic Analysis of Batteries) is the second funding round by HVM Catapult within the Energy Innovation Centre at WMG, Warwick University. Li-ion batteries have experienced a continuum of growing energy needs with power and capacity demands now at an all-time high, particularly those needed to power vehicles. High impact safety issues around batteries have also been quite frequent within the media, and so a better understanding of battery failure mechanisms will help us to design and manufacture safer energy storage devices.
The FAB focus will be based in forensic research and diagnostics across multiple scales from the materials to the battery to the device. This will enable a comprehensive understanding of the spectrum of issues that continue to dominate battery performance as we continue to develop new materials and higher energy storage possibilities. This project will strategically target key companies and universities to engage with in collaborative and commercial research
We are looking for a Project Engineer or Research Fellow for a predominantly laboratory-based role, which will involve the use of chemicals, handling of battery materials and solvents (including N-methyl pyrrolidone), performing diagnostics and characterisation of batteries. Activities will be supported by access to a broad array of materials characterisation equipment: SEM, SIMS, X-Ray Tomography, XRD and other analytical techniques. A key target is growing our industry engagement with companies involved with automotive energy storage (but not exclusively so). This includes investigations for companies wanting to characterise their devices and batteries using cutting-edge forensic techniques, but also to be involved in the development of new in operando approaches to understand real-time failure mechanisms
You will need a good honours degree in a relevant subject, along with a good understanding of the technologies or experience of working in this area. You will also need experience in experimental design, data analysis and interpretation of materials or electrochemical characterisation data.
