New EU Platform Highlights Over 1771 Energy Storage Projects

The European Energy Storage Inventory, developed by the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission, is a new interactive platform that maps and analyzes over 1771 energy storage projects across Europe. This publicly accessible tool allows users to explore projects by technology type, location, scale, and status-offering deep insights into how storage supports the EU's energy transition.

A standout feature is its detailed inclusion of Thermal Energy Storage (TES) systems, which are gaining traction as a key solution for integrating renewable energy and improving energy efficiency in sectors like heating, cooling, and industry.

The platform also highlights:

  • A comprehensive technology landscape including mechanical, electrochemical, chemical, and thermal storage;

  • Insights into policy frameworks and the EU’s strategic support for energy storage;

  • An overview of ongoing pilot and commercial projects driving innovation and deployment across member states.

This platform serves as a knowledge base and a monitoring tool to support researchers, policymakers, and industry stakeholders working toward a more flexible and decarbonized European energy system.
